Blue green algae Red Alert warning lifted at Lake Ainsworth in Lennox Head
A Red Alert level warning (high alert) for blue-green algae has been lifted for Lake Ainsworth in the North Coast region following sampling by Ballina Shire Council.
As the Red Alert has been lifted there are no longer any restrictions on recreational activities as previously advised.
Recent rainfall in the catchment has seen significant inflows to the lake which have reduced the levels of blue-green algae. However, these inflows may also contain nutrient loads which may lead to a quick increase in blue-green algae growth once conditions settle.
Recreational users are therefore advised to apply caution and avoid any areas where discolouration or scums appear or where the water gives off an earthy or musty odour.
Report all signs of blue-green algae to Ballina Shire Council.
Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients.
People who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae are advised to seek medical advice.
